The estate, originally known as Cope Castle until after the Civil War, was erected around 1605 for Sir Walter Cope. During the onset of World War II in 1940, the estate was hit by a ten hour bombing raid and was mostly destroyed. Today, the ruins lay behind the Holland Park Theatre, home of Opera Holland Park.
