Villeneuve les Avignon." See in the left of this image is Tour Philippe Le Bel, a fortification ordered built by French King Philippe le Bel in 1293. Anchored into a rock outcropping overlooking the Rhne River, it was constructed to protect the bridge to Saint Benezet and keep a watchful eye on the expanding power of Avignon.
