the maze-like hand-painted designs are sophisticated interpretations of their cosmic beliefs

The black paper could certainly be cut to separate the two roosters

Lots has been written about the Pennsylvania Dutch use of these complex geometric, heavenly inspired stars on the sides of barns and far beyond, and I do think they capture both a magical sort of wonder and a sense of universal order.
