It was acquired from a private collection. It is the traditional battle shield of the ZULU tribe warriors under their leader Shaka known as an Isihlangu. This shield was handmade in the traditional fashion of raw cowhide. The pattern is black and white and it has a central stiffening shaft of wood known as the mgobo which is correctly decorated with fur
