They both have the first-glance feeling of very sweet folk objects to me

There is a small hole at the center of the top

It's best sized for a small hand

and with the chip carved detailing along the edges of all of the horizontals

Ever Satisfying and Useful Nesting and Stacking Cubes, c. 1930s-40s, Set of Five folk painted panel Classic Arts and Crafts styleI am forever looking for these but it is a rare day that I turn up a good set and this is the first set I've ever had where the boxes are sized scaled to nest at graduated heights, so they make this terrific looking stepped rainbow pyramid when arranged one inside the next. I'd be inclined to set them that way and leave them alone, but they're great ones for stacking and using as pedestals for other things too, with plenty of wear but not much paint
