I believe the figures are carved of wood and glued inside

with black painted shoes that just peek out below the belly of the mule (I assume) on the reverse side

both from the same estate

Betty's Checkerboard Cat on Wood Panel metal dino was from MaineI really wish I had other works by the Betty Groose (or similar), who made this in Miss Adams' classroom, grade school I would guess. It's almost as if she was anticipating the digital age, dividing the cat into pixels, though seems more likely she might first have taken a stab at it using graph paper, and then recreated it free hand much better with the squares getting a little wonky here and there.
