During WWI, some slight modifications were made to the canteen cover, the color changed slightly to a more drab appearance and, perhaps most notably, the eagle snap fasteners were changed to lift the dot fasteners. In addition, a mounted version of the cover was introduced with a russet leather strap secured by loops on the side and bottom of the cover that attached to the saddle by a spring clip at the top.
