I think in part it is the use of crushed shells to encrust every inch of the surface here

These were made by the US Embossing Company, based in Albany New York, though the box for this set is long gone. I believe one can never have to many of these and have actually dreamt of having many hundreds of them spread across the entire surface of a coffee table,
