It's not until fairly recently that I really started appreciating antique toleware

I found it with a book inside and believe it was indeed intended as a book box

20 7/8” x 11 3/4” x 2 7/8”

so these certainly date to the 1880s or so

and as jumping off points for more  improvisatory creative play

The beautiful hand marbled covers on this one have come apart from the rest of it, perhaps good now for repurposing, but the pretty blue pages are holding together, and are pretty much full.
