I do not know whence this came

There were probably once at least as few more drawers to make a complete grid

which also makes it look a bit like a medieval armor helmet from that side

as to me the painted houses on it remind me very much of early German Erzgebirge ones

Found in PA, and sure feels like a portrait of a specific house to me. Paper: 4 1 8" x 3 1 4". drawing area: 2 3 4" x 2". Uneven size and rough bottom edge as evident; paper not fragile.
