Probably later used as a signal cannon, this started life around 1800 as a BOAT CANNON. Mounted in the bow of a rowing boat it fired straight ahead a solid iron ball of ONE INCH across. Of heavy construction this was a serious weapon that could be taken ashore, its wood Naval carriage mounted on four iron truck wheels allowed it to be dragged overland perhaps to blast the wood gates of some New England Fort. The
