The workers were mainly poorly paid young women who were prone to industrial illnesses, like the bone rotting phossy jaw caused by chemicals used in match manufacture. Besant had been asked for help to set up a union and she went on to lead the women into a strike, forcing the firm to improve pay and conditions.
